Gutter Snakeskin 2023-01-08

Maybe I should clean out that gutter more frequently.

I’m assuming an oak snake left that skin, but of course I assumed that about the snake that turned out to be a rattlesnake.

Anyway, I also had to remove the grapevine, because it had grown roots into the gutter, completely blocking it up.

Snake moved far away 2022-10-03

The dogs found this snake, and Gretchen didn’t like it.

Honeybun, Blondie, and Arrow led me straight to this Crotalus horridus. Unlike our previous dogs, they kept their distance.

Gretchen called them back, I got the hoe and a cardboard box, put the snake in the box, the box in the truck, and drove the truck miles away.

This rattler now has woods to catch mice with nobody living nearby.

Snake of the other day 2022-08-17

Mark it on the calendar: first time Gretchen ever saw a snake first.

All the dogs and I walked right past this timber rattler in the front driveway.

She didn’t think I should pick up this Crotalus horridus. I don’t know why.

Dogs and snake of the day 2021-05-18

Honeybun was happy to back off. She is barely visible, bottom left.

The snake was making a big show of striking at them.

Yellow Dog was more, “I hate snakes. That’s a snake. I’m gonna get it.” But eventually she gave a huff and flopped down to sit near the snake. I had to pick her up to get her to move away.

Then the snake slithered quickly into the woods.

Snake chose poorly, say dogs 2019-05-18

Update 2019-05-20: A more likely identification.

Definitely not a rattlesnake. Whatever it is, it chose poorly by showing up right in front of the dogs’ doghouse.

Don’t know which dog dislikes them most, maybe Yellow Dog. Continue reading

Cottonmouth moccasin v Yellow Dog and Brown Dog @ OPF 2016-11-29

At the far side of the pond, Yellow Dog spotted a moccasin before anybody else. The small but deadly Agkistrodon piscivorus didn’t stand a chance against the pair of experienced snake wranglers, Yellow Dog and Brown Dog.

Can you see the snake? (Tail, lower left)
