Jane S. Kuntz, of Lancaster, a retired teacher, died Sunday in GreenField Manor, Lancaster, after a lenthy illness. She was 87.
A lifelong Lancaster resident, the former Jane S. Smith was the valedictorian of the Class of 1943 at Lancaster High School and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Marietta College in Ohio.
Returning to Lancaster, she taught English for five years,
then raised her family. She returned to teaching in the 1970s, first as a substitute teacher, then as an elementary school reading aide.
Mrs. Kuntz was a member of the Lancaster Historical Society, the Lancaster Opera House and Lancaster Presbyterian Church, where she was the first elder-deacon liaison. She also was an election poll worker.
Active in the American Field Service student exchange program, she was host mother to more than 10 foreign students through AFS and Rotary International.
Her husband of 52 years, Allen H., a professor emeritus at the University at Buffalo, died in 2003.
Survivors include a son, Karl; four daughters, Heidi Chaves, Sara Dickinson, Kristin Kuntz and Gretchen Quarterman; and two sisters, Kathryn Peters and Eleanor Wertz.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Zurbrick-Amigone Funeral Home, 5615 Broadway, Lancaster.

The family will be present on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Zurbrick-AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, 5615 Broadway, Lancaster, where Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Friends invited.
